St. Catharines Marina - Clean Marina Practices

Bilge Cleaning:
Before your boat is launched, make sure your bilge is clean. It is important that the cleaning be carried out on land far from the water. When the boat is on land it is easier to collect the waste from the boat drain and dispose of it properly. Please confer with the marina staff for proper disposal directions.

Oil Pollution/Fuelling Restrictions:
Petroleum products are often pumped out of the bilge and into the water. These products are harmful to the environment and their presence in the water is easily avoided. As a boat owner, you are responsible for maintaining your boat to ensure that fuel and oil leaks are prevented. Your boat should have an oil absorbent "pillow" in the bilge and it should be inspected regularly. For safety reasons the bilge should be inspected on every visit to the boat. Oil and fuel leaks are not only harmful to the environment, but can also be very costly. Please make sure that your boat is well maintained.

Steps to follow to protect our environment and your safety:

1. No boat of any type may be fuelled at your dock. All fuelling must take place at the gas dock with a gas attendant on hand.

2. Inspect your bilge frequently.

3. Install an oil/fuel absorbent "pillow" into your bilge in case a leak develops.

4. Use a flashlight and check the bilge water with your finger to see if it feels oily or smells of fuel.

5. Do not pump out the bilge unless you are sure it is just water in the bilge.

6. Ask staff about pumping out your bilge if you have used a bilge cleaner. Bilge cleaners should not be pumped into the marina or lake.

7. Repair any leaks immediately.

8. Your bilge should be properly cleaned before the boat is launched in the spring. The wash water can be easily collected and properly disposed of when the boat is on land.

9. Do not return your boat back to your dock immediately after a fuel fill-up unless you are sure there is enough room in your tank for expansion of gas or diesel fuel.

Waste Oil and Oil Filters:
You may leave your used oil and oil filters to be recycled by the marina. Oil must be left in the sealed plastic containers that are clearly marked as being used oil and with the name of the boat owner or the boat's name on the containers.

Antifreeze:
Used antifreeze may also be left for recycling by the marina. These sealed plastic containers must also be properly labelled. Boaters are encouraged to retrieve all of the antifreeze from their engines and collect it for recycling before the boat is launched in the spring.

Batteries:
Twelve-volt batteries are available at the marina's service department. Used batteries can also be left for recycling at the marina.

Cans and Bottles:
There are recycling containers placed around the marina. You may put all glass and cans (food and beverage only) in these barrels to be recycled. Please do not put any other materials in them.
